Nutrient enrichment increases invertebrate herbivory and pathogen damage in grasslands

چکیده
Plant damage by invertebrate herbivores and pathogens influences the dynamics of grassland ecosystems, but anthropogenic changes in nitrogen phosphorus availability can modify these relationships. Using a globally distributed experiment, we describe leaf on 153 plant taxa from 27 grasslands worldwide, under ambient conditions with experimentally elevated phosphorus. Invertebrate significantly increased addition, especially grasses non-leguminous forbs. Pathogen legumes not Effects were generally weaker. Damage was higher more precipitation, climatic did change effects nutrients damage. On average, relatively pathogen grasses. Community-weighted mean reflected functional group patterns, no N community-weighted (due to opposing responses forbs) stronger consistent forbs). Synthesis. As human-induced inputs continue increase, understanding their impacts becomes increasingly important. Our results demonstrate that eutrophication frequently increases precipitation across wide array grasslands. is likely increase future, potential consequences for plant, communities, as well transfer energy trophic levels.

Impact of invertebrate herbivory in grasslands depends on plant species diversity.
Invertebrate herbivores are ubiquitous in most terrestrial ecosystems, and theory predicts that their impact on plant community biomass should depend on diversity and productivity of the associated plant communities. To elucidate general patterns in the relationship between invertebrate herbivory, plant diversity, and productivity, we carried out a long-term herbivore exclusion experiment at mu...
متن کاملInsect herbivory accelerates nutrient cycling and increases plant production.
Ecologists hold two views about the role of herbivory in ecosystem dynamics. First, from a food web perspective in population/community ecology, consumption by herbivores reduces plant abundance. Second, from a nutrient cycling perspective in ecosystem ecology, herbivory sometimes slows down cycling, which decreases plant abundance, but at other times speeds up cycling, which possibly increases...
متن کاملNutrient Enrichment Increases Mortality of Mangroves
Nutrient enrichment of the coastal zone places intense pressure on marine communities. Previous studies have shown that growth of intertidal mangrove forests is accelerated with enhanced nutrient availability. However, nutrient enrichment favours growth of shoots relative to roots, thus enhancing growth rates but increasing vulnerability to environmental stresses that adversely affect plant wat...
متن کاملInvertebrate-mediated Nutrient Loading Increases Growth of an Intertidal Macroalga
Even in nitrogen-replete ecosystems, microhabitats exist where local-scale nutrient limitation occurs. For example, coastal waters of the northeastern Pacific Ocean are characterized by high nitrate concentrations associated with upwelling. However, macroalgae living in high-zone tide pools on adjacent rocky shores are isolated from this upwelled nitrate for extended periods of time, leading to...
متن کاملPlant species' origin predicts dominance and response to nutrient enrichment and herbivores in global grasslands
Exotic species dominate many communities; however the functional significance of species' biogeographic origin remains highly contentious. This debate is fuelled in part by the lack of globally replicated, systematic data assessing the relationship between species provenance, function and response to perturbations. We examined the abundance of native and exotic plant species at 64 grasslands in...
